At 38 years old, playing in his record-equalling sixth World Cup, Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass to lead Argentina to a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria in their Group J opener. Messi was the undisputed star of the night, netting a clinical hat-trick to secure the win. After an early goal by Messi was ruled out for offside in the 5th minute, he broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, assisted by Rodrigo De Paul. He added a second in the 60th minute and completed his first-ever World Cup hat-trick in the 76th minute. This historic performance brought Messi's total World Cup goal tally to 16, tying him with Germany's Miroslav Klose for the most goals in tournament history. The match also saw an early scare for Argentina when an 8th-minute goal by Algeria's Fares Chaibi was disallowed for offside, but La Albiceleste dominated the remainder of the match with their talisman leading the charge.
