16 വർഷത്തോളം ഗ്രാമത്തിന് കാവലായിരുന്ന സോണി എന്ന വളർത്തുനായക്ക് കണ്ണീരോടെ വിടനൽകി മട്ടന്നൂർ വെളിയമ്പ്രയിലെ പറയനാട്ടുകാർ. പുഷ്പചക്രം അർപ്പിച്ച് സംസ്‌കാരച്ചടങ്ങുകളോടെയാണ് അവർ സോണിയെ യാത്രയാക്കിയത്. 

കുഞ്ഞായിരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് സോണിയ എന്നാ നായ പറയനാട്ടെത്തിയത്. നാട്ടുകാർ സ്‌നേഹത്തോടെ അവൾക്ക് സോണി(സോണിയ) എന്ന പേര് നൽകി. പറയനാട്ടെ കടവരാന്തയിലും വീടുകളിലും എല്ലാ ദിവസും സോണിയെത്തും. മിക്ക കടകളിൽ നിന്നും വീടുകളിൽ നിന്നും നാട്ടുകാർ ഭക്ഷണം നൽകും. രാത്രി വൈകും വരെ നാടിന് കാവലായി സോണിയുണ്ടാകും. പ്രായാധിക്യം മൂലമാണ് കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം നായ മരണപ്പെട്ടത്.

വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് പന്നിയെ വീഴ്ത്താൻ വെച്ച കെണിയിൽ കുടുങ്ങി നായക്ക് തൊലിയുരിഞ്ഞ് പരിക്കേറ്റിരുന്നു. നാട്ടുകാരാണ് വേണ്ട ചികിത്സയും ശുശ്രൂഷയും നൽകിയത്. രണ്ടു വർഷം മുമ്പ് വയറിൽ മുഴ വന്നപ്പോഴും നാട്ടുകാർ എല്ലാവരും  പണം സ്വരൂപിച്ച് ശസ്ത്രക്രിയ നടത്തി സോണിയെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തി. പറയനാടിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ സ്‌നേഹവായ്പും ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങിയാണ് ഒടുവിൽ സോണി വിടവാങ്ങിയത്.
