സുപ്രീംകോടതി ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസായി ജസ്റ്റിസ് ബി.ആർ.ഗവായ് ചുമതലയേറ്റു. രാഷ്ട്രപതി ഭവനില്‍ നടന്ന ചടങ്ങില്‍ രാഷ്ട്രപതി ദ്രൗപതി മുര്‍മു സത്യവാചകം ചൊല്ലിക്കൊടുത്തു. ജസ്റ്റിസ് സഞ്ജീവ് ഖന്ന വിരമിച്ച ഒഴിവിലാണ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് ബി.ആർ.ഗവായ് ചുമതലയേറ്റത്. 

മലയാളി ജസ്റ്റിസ് കെ.ജി. ബാലകൃഷ്ണന് ശേഷം സുപ്രീംകോടതി ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് ആകുന്ന രണ്ടാമത്തെ ദലിത് വിഭാഗക്കാരനും ആദ്യ ബുദ്ധമത വിശ്വാസിയുമാണ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് ബി.ആർ.ഗവായ്. മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ അമരാവതി സ്വദേശിയായ ഗവായ് 2019ലാണ്  സുപ്രീംകോടതി ജഡ്ജിയായത്.  മുന്‍ കേരള ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ ആര്‍.എസ്.ഗവായിയുടെ മകനാണ് ബി.ആർ.ഗവായ്.
