The Thiruvananthapuram Latin Archdiocese has openly expressed its strong dissatisfaction with the newly formed UDF government, alleging that political manipulation and backroom dramas cost the community its rightful representation in the state cabinet. The remarks from Archbishop Dr. Thomas J. Netto came shortly after the newly appointed Fisheries Minister, V.E. Abdul Gafoor, visited the church headquarters in Vellayambalam to pacify the community leadership. The church authorities highlighted that despite their explicit demand to assign the crucial Fisheries portfolio to someone with deep roots and understanding of the coastal sector, the portfolio was instead allocated to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). While the Archbishop warned that community anxieties would persist until the pressing grievances of local fishermen are structurally addressed, he added that they hope to resolve these political differences through friendly dialogue. On the other hand, Minister Abdul Gafoor downplayed the controversy, calling the meeting a routine courtesy visit and assuring the media that the government is fully committed to taking all communities forward while prioritizing coastal welfare.
