കോതമംഗലം വടാട്ടുപാറയില്‍ മൂന്നുവിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ പുഴയില്‍ വീണ് മരിച്ചു.  കോതമംഗലം ബസേലിയോസ് ഡന്റല്‍ കോളജിലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളാണ് പലവന്‍പടി പുഴയില്‍ ഒഴുക്കില്‍പ്പെട്ട് മരിച്ചത്. ബിയോണ്‍ (തിരുവല്ല), ഹരീഷ് (തിരുവനന്തപുരം). അതുല്‍ (കോട്ടയം) എന്നിവരാണ് മരിച്ചത് . ഒന്‍പതു പേരാണ് കുളിക്കാനിറങ്ങിയത്. 

അവധി ദിവസമായതിനാല്‍ പ്രകൃതിഭംഗി ആസ്വദിക്കാനായി എത്തിയതായിരുന്നു വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍. ഇടമലയാര്‍ ഡാമില്‍ നിന്ന് വൈദ്യുതോൽപാദനത്തിന് ശേഷം പുറത്തുവിടുന്ന വെള്ളമാണ് പുഴയിലേക്ക് എത്തുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്തും നിറയെ വെള്ളമുണ്ടാകാറുണ്ടെന്ന് നാട്ടുകാര്‍ പറയുന്നു. ഇതറിയാതെ ഇറങ്ങിയതാവാം അപകടത്തിന് കാരണമായതെന്നാണ് പ്രാഥമിക നിഗമനം. നാട്ടുകാരെത്തിയാണ് മൃതദേഹങ്ങള്‍ നീന്തിയെടുത്തത്. സ്ഥലത്ത് മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് ബോര്‍ഡുകളൊന്നുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ലെന്നും ആക്ഷേപമുണ്ട്.
